How to measure
  1. Front waistband, over the shoulder, to the back waistband.
  2. Pick H-Back or X-Back to match what you already wear — the stitching follows the path of the leather across your back either way.
  3. Tell me your connectors: button, loop, clip, or anything else. Not sure what you have? Send a picture.
  4. Give me the total measurement.
Care & what not to do
DoWipe with a damp cloth. Oil lightly twice a year. Dry slowly at room temperature. Send it back for re-stitching instead of retiring it.
Don’tNo machine washing, no drying on a radiator or in the sun, no petroleum solvents, no mink oil — it softens the temper.
Shipping & returns

Made to order in 5–6 weeks, then UPS with tracking. Custom-stamped pieces can’t be returned, but sizing or workmanship problems get fixed or remade at no charge — email me first.

Anatomy of the pair

Every detail, up close

The parts you cannot see in a catalog photo are the parts that fail first on cheap gear. Here is what you are actually buying.

Solid hardware
Solid hardwareCast brass, nickel, or blackened steel. No plated pot metal, nothing that shears under a load.
Burnished edges
Burnished edgesEvery edge is beveled, wet-slicked, and waxed by hand so it sheds water instead of drinking it.
Cut from one side
Cut from one sideSame Hermann Oak side as the straps and belts, so the temper matches end to end.

Built for the job

01
Button or clip

Tell me your connectors — button, loop, clip, or something else — and they are built to match what you already wear.

02
H-Back or X-Back

The stitch pattern follows the path of the leather across your back, whichever style you carry.

03
Sized to your rise

Measured front waistband, over the shoulder, to the back waistband, so the weight sits where it should instead of digging in.

04
Large, XL, or custom

Large runs 38–44", XL runs 42–48". Anywhere else, custom sizing is +$25.

Your numbers checked

Measurements read back against your connectors and style. If something looks off, I call before a knife touches the hide.

Testimonials

Almost immediately I started getting questions about where I got my leather suspenders and radio strap from. People notice items made from Martin Leatherworking. There was a back and forth with Martin Leatherworking to get the specific details right on my items, and the turnaround time was surprisingly fast.

Questions on this piece

Sizing & FAQ

Full sizing & FAQ →
Where do suspenders get stamped?

Two spots: up to 8 characters on the cross piece, and one character on each shoulder strap — usually an initial. Any of the three can be left blank. Same rule as everywhere else: letters, numbers, and symbols all count as a character.

H-Back or X-Back — which do I need?

Whichever your department already wears — the stitching follows the path of the leather across your back either way. Tell me your connectors too (button, loop, clip, or something else). Not sure what you have? Send a picture through the custom order form.

How long until my order ships?

5–6 weeks from when you order — everything is made after the order comes in. Rush placement is +$60 and ships in 10 business days.

Can you match my department's specs?

Usually. Send the spec sheet or a photo of an approved piece through the custom order form and I'll tell you straight whether I can match it.
