Anatomy of the strap

Every detail, up close

The parts you cannot see in a catalog photo are the parts that fail first on cheap gear. Here is what you are actually buying.

A black postman slide on a red double sewn strap
Postman slideSlides along the strap to take up the slack, in stainless or black. One standard size, adjusted here rather than cut to a measurement.
Chicago screws at the end of a black single piece strap, with its quick release and slide
Chicago screwsIt fastens to the helmet with Chicago screws, so it comes off without cutting anything when it needs replacing.
Burnished edgesEvery edge is beveled, wet-slicked, and waxed by hand so it sheds water instead of drinking it.

Built for the job

01
Single piece or double sewn

One layer of 9–10 oz with no stitching, or two layers of 5–6 oz glued and sewn back to back so both sides are smooth.

02
Quick release, or not

Metal in stainless or black, or plastic in black, on the single piece. The double sewn is too thick for plastic, so it takes metal or none.

03
5/8" wide, about 30"

One standard size, adjusted with the postman slide.

04
Repairs for life

Stitching, hardware, a worn slide. Send back anything I made and I'll put it right. You pay shipping.

Cut from one side

Laid out on a single Hermann Oak side, around scars and stretchy belly.

Spools of waxed thread and the rivet setter on the bench02
Sewn, on the double

The double sewn is two layers glued smooth side out, then stitched down both edges. The single piece is one layer and no thread.

03Set on the hardware

The postman slide, the quick release if you picked one, and the Chicago screws that fasten it to your helmet.

An edge being slicked smooth by hand with a wooden burnisher04

Sizing & FAQ

Full sizing & FAQ →
Single piece or double sewn helmet strap?

The single piece is one layer of 9–10 oz leather with no stitching. The double sewn is two layers of 5–6 oz, glued and sewn back to back so both sides are smooth, and it costs more because it is twice the leather and twice the time. The double sewn is too thick for a plastic quick release, so it takes a metal one or none.

How long until my order ships?

5–6 weeks from when you order. Everything is made after the order comes in. Rush placement is +$60 and ships in 10 business days.

Can you match my department's specs?

Usually. Send the spec sheet or a photo of an approved piece through the custom order form and I'll tell you straight whether I can match it.

Do you do department or bulk orders?

Yes. Six pieces or more gets bulk pricing and one invoice. Purchase orders are fine; net 30 for departments.
